Tony Atherton is a freelance trainer and writer who specialises in presenting in-company courses in technical report writing, business report writing, minute taking and negotiation skills mainly in the United Kingdom.

Tony became a freelance trainer in 1998 after being Training Manager at NTL (now part of the Virgin Group). He has presented almost a thousand courses for a range of clients in both the public and private sectors. Whilst some of these were on behalf of two of Britain's largest training companies, for the last four years he has worked exclusively with his own clients.

These have included BP, Bunzl, Daresbury Labs, E.ON, Europol, First GB Railfreight, GKN, Imerys, Invensys, local councils, Monarch Airlines, Mouchel, NHS trusts, Northumbrian Water, Ofsted, Open University, Pfizer, Raytheon, Royal Navy, Salvation Army, Scottish Power, Thales and many others. With a degree in electronics, Tony qualified as a Chartered Electrical Engineer and was a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Physics. He served as an instructor in the Royal Navy and worked in the defence industry for one of the Marconi companies before joining the University of Hong Kong as a lecturer. Later he joined the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), which was privatised to became NTL where he became the Training Manager.

Although originally working in engineering, in the 1990s Tony turned to training in negotiation skills, time management and writing skills. He became a published author in 1984 and has written four books and over 90 articles.

He has also acted as a training inspector, inspecting 23 organisations on behalf of the Adult Learning Inspectorate / Training Standards Council (now incorporated into Ofsted).
